All the differerence in the world. I find that most derby girls are skating on boots/plates well below their ability levels. Most are also very hesitant to upgrade and change. However, everyone that I've "convinced" to upgrade has been amazed at the differences in comfort, response and overall improvement in their skating. So yes, by all means, get some good skates!
Compare cost and durability, you end up with an equation that is made up of your experience level, how aggressive you skate, what type of surface you're on (concrete eats skates) - and how much you're willing to spend, how often.
In the past 4 years i have worked on getting skaters new skates with Killer Customizations its not even funny. I have opened my door to a new brand of community of skaters. I seen skates that have not been cleaned in 20 years. I have seen skates that the nut that holds the bearings on was so wrenched down how did that skater ever get around the track. I have seen just about every problem that skaters that don't know how to work on their skates will have. It's unbelievable what i have seen.
Most don't know how to fix their own skates. Crazy!
All they need is a Skate Key 9/16", 3/8", and 1/2" socket with wrench Bearing Cleaner and a little of Sapphire Oil.
Maybe i need to teach one more class called Learn to fix your own skates
Who else, after all, would give a f*ck?
I have deep knowledge of all things roller derby and skates!
DURABILITY BOOTS:
BOOTS (Leather or Vinyl)
The fact is, vinyl is not durable - not like quality leather. $100 skates aren't made of quality leather. The only way manufacturers can afford to produce leather boots at that price point is to use lower quality leather and overseas workmanship. DON'T BUY VINYL!!!
