Please do not race around the track without interacting with your opponent jammer. That is what amateurs and rookies do.
Here is how a pro sells a jam:
When you are at the rear of the pack, yell to your opponent jammer, "Hey, Jeff or Jane, Lets go on this one!"
Yelling at skaters in the pack is how they know what to do. This is also how both teams of pack skaters know you are setting something so they can help you and your opponent work out of the pack together.
When the play begins look for your opponent and stay in eye contact with him or her. TRY to break from the pack at the SAME TIME as him or her!
Eye contact: Look at them without telegraphing to the audience you're working together.
Now the 60 seconds begins.
Your job is to create pathos and excitement on the jam. It is not to speed skate around to the rear of the pack and score. Remember, roller derby is not real.
Stay close to your opponent and throw a block. Then trade blocks. Look like you're competing and angry (game face). Get into it you bitches! Make it look brutal and real!
Miss block, side step, stagger, knock each other down and get back up! This is called WORKING THE JAM.
You must do this and listen to the audience. They will tell you what SELLS! Learn that. As this is the basis for your growth into the roller derby world.
Now you've taken some time on the jam and you've entertained the audience. Hopefully you learned a move or two that thrilled the audience. That' all there is to roller derby.
If you or your opponent do not go down and stay down on the jam then the blockers at the rear will work out who will score and so on.
PRACTICE THIS AND LEARN TO DEVELOP YOUR SHOWMANSHIP
P.S. Me you and Roman need to skate here in Oceanside.
