RollerCon '09

If you love roller derby, you know that magic happens when rollergirls get together. Well, picture this: over 1,000 rollergirls from all over the world, all gathering in Las Vegas to share some stories, raise some hell and get their skate on. RollerCon ‘09 is the fifth annual “meeting of the wheels” and it just gets better every year. This year marks our first insistence on AIR CONDITIONED SKATING.

New to roller derby? Seasoned and scarred veteran? Every skill level is welcome, and we’ve planned tons of events for everyone to enjoy! Of course, there’s also fun stuff for our beloved referees and productioneers — we can’t leave them out of the fun!

Friday at Noon, PDT Derby News Network will be streaming video of the Boston Derby Dames vs. The Bay Area Derby Girls (aka BAD Girls). As most folks who aren't at the con would be at work then, it'll be archived for viewing later on.

It's #5 West vs #5 East. BAD Girls had previously been ranked 1st in the West, but a stunning upset by then #5 West Rat City took them down to fifth and moved Rat City up to 4th. Boston had set up one of the toughest schedules imaginable this year, they've always just missed making it to Nationals. They came within one point of topping #4 East Carolina Rollergirls at East Coast Derby Extravaganza.

The East is a bit stronger region than the West this year, and based upon Rat City's performance against Carolina recently, I'd have to triangulate and say that Boston should be able to win this one. I wouldn't hazard a guess as to the points spread.

I would think this bout would have access to some of the pick of WFTDA's referees, which could have a greater impact on the BAD Girls than Boston. BAD Girls have skated only two sanctioned bouts thus far this year, without knowing what their roster looks like it's hard to make a good guess on their chances in this one.
